Who are NIMGA?
Northern Ireland Mushroom Growers Association group are a grower owned, grower led, association representing the interests of Mushroom growers throughout Northern Ireland. We are a small, dedicated team of horticulturists based right across Northern Ireland, growing a variety of mushrooms.
As a response to the diminishing number of growers based in Northern Ireland, the Labour and energy crisis’s within the industry and laterally the cost of living crisis our association was established by a determined group of mushroom growers in 2022. The group realised that the Agri-Food Co-operation Scheme (AFCS) provided by DAERA programme could be the ideal vehicle to address their urgent priorities to ensure the survival of the Northern Ireland Mushroom Grower and do what we do best: grow nutritious and delicious mushrooms for you to enjoy.
Through the AFCS programme the group identified key priorities to ensure that group members could become more efficient and the industry as a whole throughout NI could adapt and evolve to address current issues in production and marketing.
Through accommodating the transfer of knowledge within the group the following group priorities can be addressed as follows:
Extend the NI Mushroom Growers Association Group membership to all mushroom growers in NI, currently 13.
Review individual group members’ efficiencies in labour and standardise and improve labour practices within the industry.
Review individual group members’ efficiencies in processing and standardise and improve processing systems within the industry where possible. (This may require Study Tours to industry leaders in Canada to research processing systems.)
Review individual group members’ energy efficiencies and systems and improve through researching and utilising green solutions and through group purchasing where possible.
Research New Product Development opportunities to evolve the industry from largely commodity products to having at least 15% of output as added value products by end of year 2.
Research and review joint marketing and distribution opportunities within the group, making it a lot easier to give the people what they want: mushrooms.
